Staying comfortable in your home this winter
We have put together some tips of things that you can do to keep safe and warm in your own home during the winter months.
Leave your boiler on
If you are planning on going away for a few days over Christmas – it is best to leave your boiler on. This will lower the chance of pipes freezing if there is a cold spell. Turn your thermostat down to about 10 degrees as this will keep your system ticking over and keep your home warm without using too much energy. If you do have any concerns about your boiler, contact us to let us know as soon as you can before the Christmas period.
Check radiators
Ensure that radiators are warming up completely and that they are getting hot from top to bottom in every room. If any of your radiators aren’t getting warm at the top, you most likely need to bleed them. If you’re not sure how to do this, or you notice a leak – give us a call and we can come and have a look.
Test your smoke alarm
It’s important to check your smoke alarm monthly and make sure it is working correctly. Most detectors have a test button on the face of the device. Once you press this button, wait a few seconds, you should hear a loud sound should come from the device. If it doesn’t, you need to change the batteries. If it still doesn’t work after you have done this, let us know and we can have a look.
Locate your stopcock
A stopcock is the off switch to your mains water supply. It is important to know where it is so you can turn it off if you have a leak. It is usually situated under the sink or may be in your airing cupboard.
Staying safe over Christmas
Beware of trailing cables and wires and avoid overloading plug sockets and extension leads. Keep decorations and cards away from other heat sources, such as light fittings and don’t leave burning candles unattended.
Predicted bad weather
In the event of the weather getting suddenly colder, try to have a few essentials put by – such as some milk and bread in the freezer, extra tins of food and teabags.
