Our story

Our story

As a housing association, we provide social and affordable housing to those with housing needs, for example for those who cannot afford market rent, or who are in need of support.  You can learn more about different types of affordable rent, including social rent, here.

We are a non-profit housing association, which means that all of our income, such as rent, goes back into our services, into maintaining and investing in our current properties, and into building new homes.

Our history

Our organisation, initially known as North Hertfordshire Homes, was formed in 2003, following a Large Scale Voluntary Transfer of homes from North Hertfordshire Council.  This was due to residents voting in favour of the formation of a new housing association to manage their homes.

The agreement to become a housing association in 2003 meant that the organisation was better placed to leverage funding, enabling investment in new and existing homes, and enabling support for local communities.  We met all of the commitments made at the time of forming the new organisation, with investment in homes and support for residents and the communities in which we work remaining an ongoing priority for us.

Though we were initially known as North Hertfordshire Homes, we became “Settle” in 2018, which reflects the fact that our homes are now spread across a wider geographical area, and emphasises the importance of our properties being a place to call home.

We are delighted to now support over 24,000 residents in more than 10,000 homes, working across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and South Cambridgeshire.

We have most recently launched our 2030 plan, guiding our work over the coming years.  We are clear in this plan on our commitment to being relentlessly resident focussed – putting residents first across all that we do, because they are the reason we exist.
